Preparing for your online exam

Online examination, also known as e-examination, enables examiners to conduct exams using the internet or a company-wide intranet for remote candidates. It requires candidates to answer questions within a pre-decided timeframe exactly as they would in a traditional exam format. To sit an online exam it is necessary to have a computer with high-speed internet, you will more often than not be supervised through a webcam and proctor, the reason for this is to ensure it is cheating free and secure. As technology continues to move forward, we firmly believe that online exams are one of the greatest things to happen in the education sector; and it’s clear that one of the greatest benefits of online exams is that they have broken geographical barriers and enabled wider reach and participation. Some might argue that it can remove the nerves of going to a test centre, and most importantly it eradicates the need to travel too! Below we want to give you some of our top tips to prepare for an online exam.

Flexibility to book an exam at time and date that suits you!

Many people prefer online exams as they can be taken at a time and date that is most convenient for the individual. This is a great advantage as it allows people to work around their other commitments, without the need to rearrange their schedule. For example, someone who works full-time may not be able to take an exam during weekday office hours. However, they would still be able to take the exam in the evening or on a weekend. Additionally, some companies will even let you take an online exam in the middle of the night! This means that there is no need to book time off work, or arrange childcare, as you would for a traditional exam. When you book your exam, simply pick a date and time when you know you won’t be inconvenienced. Make sure there are not going to be any home deliveries or anything that you will have to rush the exam for. Taking your exam at a time that suits you will help you to feel relaxed and confident, giving you the best chance of success.

Make sure you have the correct system

Most online exams require the use of specialist software in order to ensure the integrity of the test-taking process. This software can often be installed a few days before the exam, so be sure to leave yourself plenty of time. The software typically monitors your activity during the exam, provides a way for the proctor to communicate with you, and prevents you from searching for answers to questions while you are taking the test. In some cases, you may also be required to provide a picture of your ID in order to verify your identity. Once you have installed the software and verified your ID, you should be all set to take your online exam.

Make sure you know the exam rules

When you take an online exam, it is important to be aware of the rules and regulations that are in place. These can vary from exam to exam, so it is essential that you read the information provided by the proctoring company thoroughly. Different companies will have different policies in place, so it is important to familiarise yourself with these before you begin your exam. Failure to do so could result in your exam being invalidated. If you have any questions about the rules, the proctoring company will be more than happy to clarify them for you. By taking the time to familiarise yourself with the policies in place, you can help ensure that your exam experience is a positive one. Ensure your room is test centre ready! It is so important to ensure that you are ready for your exam and you need to set the room up correctly otherwise you won’t be able to take your exam. Here’s what you will likely need to do:

  • As you sit down to begin your exam, take a moment to clear your desk or table of any papers, books or equipment. The only exception is if you are taking an open book exam where you are allowed the official manual
  • Make sure that you have your ID on you desk; you will be asked to show this to the proctor to confirm your identity and that you are the named person who is taking the examination 
  • Turn your mobile phone off – remember this is an exam!
  • Before you begin the exam, the proctor will need to see a 360-degree view of the room you are taking the exam in. This is to ensure that there is nothing in the room that could be used to cheat. To do this, simply rotate your laptop or web camera so that the proctor can see all around the room. Once the proctor has approved your location, you can begin the exam.
  • Put a ‘do not disturb’ sign on the door – no one else can enter the room as it is you and only you taking the exam
